Sewing Initiative (Item, Nigeria)

Eurafrican-Alliance promotes non-profit projects in Africa. In particular, we look for sustainable projects that create long-term jobs in communities. This is the mission we pursue with the Sewing Initiative in Nigeria.

Project: Contract sewing centre with integrated sewing school and shared housing

Project start: March 2024

Background:
The youth unemployment rate in 2022 was 53.40% and rising. With our project, we want to create jobs. We are convinced that social entrepreneurship leads to sustainable economic growth.
We are therefore launching our sewing project, which will be built on three pillars. The foundation and first pillar is sustainable production - contract sewing. Nigeria, with over 200 million people (70% of whom are under 30 years old), offers an unsaturated market for everyday clothing. Our market and profitability analysis shows a high demand for boxer shorts, which are currently imported from India and China. For the project, we will focus on the serial production of boxer shorts.

Background:
The youth unemployment rate in 2022 was 53.40% and rising. With our project, we want to create jobs. We are convinced that social entrepreneurship leads to sustainable economic growth.

Goal:
We plan to offer young people on-site labour market opportunities in the textile value chain. The sewing school in connection with the production offers as a second pillar not only the possibility to learn a profession but also a permanent job. We expect that this solution will increase the purchasing power of the residents and thus grow the community economically. In addition, it will reduce poverty in the community.

Our research has shown that accommodation is one of the barriers that can prevent the success of a project in those communities. Most young people lack affordable accommodation and transport. Therefore, as a third and final pillar, we will offer low-cost shared housing.

Highlight:
We want the project to create an industry in small local communities to integrate them into the economy. All materials used in production are sourced exclusively from Nigeria.
